King's College Pupils Success in Model European Parliament

The Model European Parliament offers students from schools in all member states the possibility to adopt the role of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). The first stage of this programme involves pupils submitting the results of their own personal research into one of the four following areas:

- Bullying in schools
- The importance of water
- The ageing population of Europe
- International development

A number of King's College pupils submitted highly acclaimed proposals and two 6th Formers were selected to take part in the actual Model European Parliament held in El Escorial in November 2008.  This second round consists of the selected participants debating their proposals in thematic commissions then drafting a resolution to be considered by the full parliament. The Regional Government of Madrid then invited all participants to use its Parliament chamber to discuss the proposals in a public session.

Both representatives of King's College gave superb performances in this most demanding arena and one was chosen as one of the handful of most outstanding parliamentarians by the judging panel.  He will now go on to the national level of the programme in March 2009 where he will be the spokesperson for Madrid and will be expected to make a speech to all the dignitaries at the opening ceremony. The successful participants from this stage will, in turn, proceed to the real European Parliament building in Strasbourg and have a chance to influence the real decision makers.

We are immensely proud of our participants and are eagerly awaiting the next round.
