General Information for Candidates
KING’S COLLEGE
King’s College is located approximately 22 km from the centre of Madrid. Madrid is a modern, lively, European capital city with excellent cultural facilities and easy travel links to other major Spanish cities.
The school is in Tres Cantos, a ‘satellite city’ of Madrid designed in the 1970’s. Trains regularly run from Tres Cantos station to the centre of Madrid and take around 20 minutes. There is also a public bus which runs very close to the school. The majority of new staff live in the centre of Madrid and use the school bus provided to travel to and from work.
King’s College was founded over forty years ago as a British School for pupils ranging from pre-nursery to age 18. It offers British education all the way through to A Level. The school has over 1450 pupils (750 in the Primary School and 700 in the Secondary School) and the number is steadily rising as pupils from our two main feeder schools within the centre of Madrid (King’s Infant School and the King’s College Prep School, La Moraleja) join us at age 7 and 14 respectively. The majority of pupils are Spanish, although there are a significant number of British and international pupils. King’s is renowned as one of the world’s leading British International Schools and, as such, King’s College has proved an excellent platform for career development for its employees in terms of promotion to posts back in the UK and in other British schools abroad.
The school is part of King’s Group, which includes schools in Alicante, Murcia, Panama and the UK as well as the three schools in Madrid. The school is also a long-standing member of HMC and COBIS and is inspected by ISI. The last inspection was in March 2008.
Madrid is the third largest city in the European Union. The vibrant lifestyle in Madrid allows King’s College teachers to enjoy a wide range of cultural activities including: top-class Performing Arts and music, world class football, tennis, art, and food. A day’s skiing is only a forty minute drive from the College into the mountains and Madrid’s location makes it equidistant from all coastlines. Although hot in the summer, the dry atmosphere and famously bright blue skies all year round make it a very pleasant climate. An excellent internal communications network and low cost flights to the rest of Europe and North Africa make Madrid an ideal city in which to enjoy an enviable quality of life. A tax-free salary with medical benefits and a generous relocation allowance makes accessing this quality of life very affordable.
THE SCHOOL’S VISION
To establish King’s College as Europe’s premier international educational institution in the provision of the British curriculum.
THE SCHOOL’S MISSION STATEMENT
To sustain and develop an educational environment in which all students are able to fulfil their maximum potential, both as individuals and as members of a community.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The school day runs from 9.25 am – 4.25 pm for children. All teachers are expected to be in school by 9.10 am at the latest, and to be available until at least 4.45 pm. All teachers have some PPA time during the week, the exact amount depending on the classes taught and other responsibilities. Teachers are expected to do playground and lunchtime duties, on a rota basis, as necessary, but are provided with a free school lunch every day. A transport system to and from the centre of Madrid is available to staff at no charge. All staff are required to take part in the school’s extra-curricular programme and applicants should make mention of their willingness and ability to lead activities that interest them. They may also be required to cover for absent colleagues.
Spanish is not an essential requirement, although all teachers are expected to show a willingness to learn it. All British teachers are expected to communicate with the children in English at all times.
The school year runs from the beginning of September to the end of June. The Spanish teaching year is followed, so although there are no half-term breaks, there are plenty of ‘Fiesta’ bank holidays to provide mini breaks. The school year consists of 184 teaching and 194 working days. The return to work in any given year may be at the end of August or beginning of September.
CURRICULUM
King’s College offers a British curriculum alongside, for Spanish pupils, obligatory parts of the Spanish curriculum. As well as a full range of National Curriculum subjects, pupils also study Spanish language and culture.
The Early Years department, consisting one class of Pre-Nursery and three classes each of Nursery and Reception, follows the EYFS. The National Curriculum is taught throughout the School, from Year 1. Pupils take the Key Stage 2 SATs in Year 6 which are externally marked.
In Key Stage 4, pupils study for IGCSEs, and go on to study for A Levels in Years 12 and 13. Those pupils who choose to go on to higher education in Spain also follow a programme of Complementary Studies in Spanish, to fully prepare them for courses at Spanish universities. The majority of leavers go on to attend universities in the UK, most of who secure places at Russell Group establishments including Oxford and Cambridge.
THE FACILITIES
The school has large, purpose built teaching and recreation facilities, and benefits from extensive outdoor grounds, including an indoor swimming pool, equestrian centre and a new full-size artificial grass football pitch. There is a separate building for Early Years, and separate wings for Primary and Secondary. A brand new mixed boarding house, accommodating 44 boarding pupils, opened in September 2011.

Deputy Head of the Primary School
The Primary School at King’s College is high-achieving and thriving. It is renowned for academic excellence not only within Spain but across the British education system more widely within Europe. The 700 pupils who make up its population from EYFS to Year 6 are, almost without exception, motivated, committed and keen to succeed, which makes teaching and working generally within the College very fulfilling. The Primary staff body, made up of over 50 established professionals, has a wealth of experience and is highly dedicated to the students and parents it serves.
In recent years, the management organization within both the Primary and Secondary Schools has been restructured and, as such, the Deputy Head directly line-manages the Subject Coordinators and Key Stage Coordinators, alongside the classroom practitioners. He/She plays a central role not only in the day-to-day running and management of the school, but also in the strategic planning for the expansion and improvement of the educational experience the school offers. He/She meets regularly with parents and staff, and holds positions within a range of leadership groups within the College.
Suitable candidates will be able to evidence not only their wide-ranging experiences within Primary education, but also their ability to initiate and manage change, communicate very effectively with pupils, staff and parents, and handle challenges with calm assuredness. The ability to demonstrate strong management and interpersonal skills is naturally a prerequisite. In order to be fully in-tune with all aspects of life within this busy school, the Deputy Head is expected to teach a heavily reduced timetable, but one which allows them to have classroom contact across all the major age ranges. Thus, candidates should be aware that the post may entail them teaching a small amount within each Key Stage, including EYFS. The appointed candidate will be working very closely in conjunction with the Head of Primary on a daily basis and must be a trusted colleague in every sense. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will wish to move to Headship in due course and this role, within a large and highly successful school, will undoubtedly provide strong opportunities for the necessary professional development.
Applications should be made using the online Application Form and should be returned alongside a Curriculum Vitae to noelia.tolosa@kingsgroup.org by the closing date of Monday 20 February. First round interviews will take place in London during the first week in March. Final round interviews will take place in Madrid.

Head of English
Requirements and Responsibilities
King’s College is an academically selective school and the English Department is both high-achieving and thriving. The pupils, on the whole, are natural linguists and the results at both IGCSE and A Level are consistently impressive. A love of reading and the appreciation of literature are very much in evidence across the pupil ability spectrum. Value-Added data also underlines the notable progress our pupils make in this curriculum area. Pupils are motivated and keen to succeed, which makes teaching and working generally within the College very fulfilling. Pupils are passionate about learning and teachers thoroughly enjoy the many classroom and extra curricular opportunities to go beyond the basic syllabus and explore areas of particular personal interest. Aside from the wide-ranging extra-curricular programme on offer to students, including the likes of a Book Club and Debating Society, the English Department also runs ‘clinics’ at lunch times and after school to assist those who may be having difficulties with their studies or those who want to engage with academic extension material. The appointed candidate will be expected to both coordinate and involve themselves in this process.
The curriculum position and popularity of English makes it an influential core subject and the Head of English is expected to liaise regularly with both the Director of Studies and the Academic Leadership Group, a body made up of senior academic members of staff within the College. He/She will be expected to exhibit strong man-management, inter-personal, organisational, budgeting and planning skills. All Heads of Departments are also expected to devise, update and implement policies, handbooks, schemes of work and programmes of study for all Key Stages. Candidates interested in a residential post within boarding should indicate this on their application.
Responsibility posts such as Head of House, Academic Coordinator, and Head of Year may be available internally once the initial appointment has been made.
Applications should be made via the attached Application Form and should be returned via email, alongside a covering letter, to the Head’s P.A. noelia.tolosa@kingsgroup.org no later than the closing date of 27 February. Interviews will take place in London on or around 12 March.

Thus, candidates with a specialism in any of the three sciences can be adequately accommodated, although a basic knowledge of General Science for the purposes of teaching the Year 7 and 8 curriculums is a prerequisite. A Level teaching can be made available in any of the three sciences, providing the appointed candidate is suitably qualified and experienced.
The College is presently looking to broaden the scientific A Level programme on offer to students and is considering the inclusion of Psychology at AS Level in September. Candidates with the ability to help deliver such a course, or an interest in doing so, should indicate this within their application.
Candidates interested in a residential post within boarding should indicate this on their application.
Responsibility posts such as Head of House, Academic Year Coordinator, and Pastoral Year Coordinator may be available internally once the initial appointment has been made.
Applications should be made via the electronic Application Form and should be returned via email, alongside a covering letter, to the Head’s P.A. noelia.tolosa@kingsgroup.org by the closing date of 24 February. Interviews will take place in London on or around 12 March.

General Information for Candidates Applying to teach at King’s College School, Madrid
King’s College School is a thriving, day preparatory school, with a roll of 500 children of approximately 20 nationalities between the ages of 2 and 14 years (Nursery to Year 9). The Headteacher is a member of IAPS and the school is part of King’s Group, which has Colleges in Madrid, Alicante, Murcia, Panama and the UK. The school is also a member of the Council of British International Schools and is inspected by ISI. The last inspection was in March 2008.
Our mission statement is “to sustain and develop an educational environment in which all pupils are able to fulfil their maximum potential, both as individuals and as members of a community.” The aim of the school, like its sister schools in Madrid, is to deliver a British Education in Spain for Europe and the World, providing students with an excellent all-round education while fostering tolerance and understanding between young people of different nationalities and backgrounds. The modern on-site facilities include a library, ICT centre, science laboratory, music rooms, multi-purpose sports surface, gymnasium and infirmary.
Location and travel: The school’s stunning, purpose built campus is situated in La Moraleja, one of the most highly regarded residential areas of Madrid. The site is well connected to the city, just off the A1 and a short walk from the La Moraleja Metro station. The majority of teachers choose to live in Madrid city centre and travel by public transport to school (a journey of approximately one hour). Some teachers choose to live in the mountain towns north of the city and they have a half-hour drive to school.
Curriculum: Pupils follow the English National Curriculum, leading ultimately to IGCSE, AS and A Level examinations. The Early Years department, consisting of one Nursery Class and one Reception Class, follows the EYFS. The National Curriculum is taught from Year 1 and pupils take Key Stage 2 SATs in Year 6, which are externally marked.
In addition to the British curriculum, Spanish pupils follow two obligatory parts of the Spanish Curriculum. There are Induction English Classes for children over the age of 7 who need to improve their English. There are also Spanish as a Second Language Classes for international children joining the school.
On completing Key Stage 3, pupils transfer to King’s College and study for IGCSEs, and go on to study for A Levels in Years 12 and 13. Those pupils who choose to go on to higher education in Spain also follow a programme of Complementary Studies in Spanish, to fully prepare them for courses at Spanish universities. The majority of leavers go on to attend universities in the UK, most securing places at Russell Group establishments including Oxford and Cambridge.
Activities: There are choirs and performing arts groups, which participate in events throughout the year. Pupils are encouraged to explore their capabilities in the areas of music and the arts from a very early age. Sports play an important role at the school and pupils are encouraged to take part in tournaments and local competitive events, in addition to their normal PE classes. School football and basketball teams compete in the local Alcobendas Leagues and pupils also take part in inter-school championships in athletics and cross-country. There is a programme of optional-extra-classes (some of which take place at King’s College) which includes horse riding, ballet, judo, Spanish dancing, swimming, tennis, tuition in various musical instruments, performing arts, chess, language clubs and craft workshops. In addition, teachers offer some break-time clubs and activities to enhance pupils’ extra-curricular experience.
The School Day: The school day runs from 9.25am – 4.25 pm for children. All teachers are expected to be in school by 9.00 am, and to be available until at least 4.45 pm. All teachers have some PPA time during the week, the exact amount depending on the classes taught and other responsibilities. Teachers are expected to do playground and lunchtime duties, on a rota basis, and also to provide cover as reasonably required for absent colleagues. All staff are provided with a free school lunch every day. The school year runs from the beginning of September to the end of June. The Spanish teaching year is followed, so although there are no half-term breaks, there are plenty of ‘Fiesta’ bank holidays to provide mini breaks. The school year consists of 184 teaching days, and teachers work a total of 194 days in the year. The return to work after the summer holidays in any given year may be at the end of August or the beginning of September.
